A not so recent newsflush nobody seems to have noticed. Wikia has just reopened the old wiki we used to recide at for a user who spent one day editing it, it is now back to its usual dead editors barely consisting of anything, clearly we need to sort this out once and for all.
Ideas?
Somehow make a script that when a new account is created, sends a automated message informing them of the new wiki. Change the 'you've edited this, why not edit this' message like uncyc have done to tell them not to edit. Change the edit writing at the top to tell them where the site has moved.
ReplyDeleteMaybe.
I agree. We need to rake in all of those gay-ass Wikia users to this site.
ReplyDeleteI believe it's been open for about a month: I spotted it a while back but decided not to give it any oxygen on the blog.
ReplyDeleteI did do an article about it, though.
Lol, that dumbo KyleH is trolling Waxkypedia again.
ReplyDeletethe anonymous has mused upon wackypedia, and thinks KyleH is a robotic piece of weirdism for restoring all them articles despite their superflavious deletion reasons. Also, I had his mum last night in Silent Penguin's bed while he was sleeping.
ReplyDeleteABUSIVE EMAILS
ReplyDeleteTesticles, you troll, you! :)
ReplyDeleteCrosspost the entire spanking art wiki (spankingartwiki.animeotk.com, NSFW) and maybe they'll get the hint? Start with the pages on Boy Scouts. After all, that is one of the only wikis that Wikia has voluntarily deleted.
ReplyDeleteWhy not have it re-closed?
ReplyDeleteGood luck persuading Wikia to close it. :)
ReplyDeleteThis might be a wee bit less offensive if Wikia hadn't programmed this to falsely display as if certain key Illogicopedia users were still active on Wikia's forked project.
ReplyDeleteFor instance, a new user talk page gets:
"Hi, welcome to Wackypedia. Thanks for your edit to the User talk:Javilus page.
Please sign in and create a user name. It's an easy way to keep track of your contributions and helps you communicate with the rest of the community.
Please leave a message on my talk page if I can help with anything! -- Hindleyite (Talk) 14:15, Serpeniver 20, 2009 "
but the page history reveals the ugly truth:
* 14:15, Serpeniver 20, 2009 Wikia (Talk | contribs) (461 bytes) (welcoming new contributor)
Yup, Wikia is impersonating Hindleyite!
The depths to which some for-profit sites will stoop in their efforts to build an ill-gotten empire on other people's content while misappropiating one of the top Google search result positions for "consume the anus of Satan".
This "consume the anus of Satan" issue actually is beginning to smell worse than it sounds. A search for http://www.google.ca/search?q=%22consume+the+anus+of+Satan%22 yields:
ReplyDelete" 1.
Chess - Wackypedia - The nonsensical encyclopedia anyone can mess up
He has returned from Ancient Rome to consume the anus of Satan. He is the archnemesis of the Evil Emperor. He shall move in vast Triangles across the board. ...
>> wackypedia.wikia.com/wiki/Chess - Cached - Similar
In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 1 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included."
Only when you specifically request the "omitted results" do you get the Illogicopedia pages from which this was stolen:

Wikia... consuming the anus of Satan since 2004.
"Yup, Wikia is impersonating Hindleyite!"
ReplyDeleteI certainly hope this is not true. I have enough problems with impersonators as it is... in fact, you can never be sure whether it really is the genuine Hindleyite editing Illogicopedia, or leaving comments on the blog...
Why are we getting omitted as the "similar site", maybe someone should report this to google, cut them off at the source.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know, Google looks very closely at the number and type of external sites linking in. Perhaps contacting the owners of any external, non-Wikia sites who still have links to "illogicopedia.wikia.com", "wackypedia.wikia.com" or anything else tied to the Wikia fork would be a good first step? Getting those links updated to "illogicopedia.org" can be a slow process at best but is the most appropriate means to deal with the problem of Wikia 'stealing' search engine traffic.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scraper_site recognises the issue of the free-content licenses and their potential for abuse but offers no meaningful SEO advice for victim sites.
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spamdexing some links to complain to search engine operators are:
